GOETHE AND MYLIUS IN ITALY

The relationships between Germany and Italy both in the field of politics and culture have often been deeply influenced by the experience and the activities of eminent personalities. On occasion of the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the association Villa Vigoni, we would like to celebrate our founding father Heinrich Mylius (1769-1854) and his relationships with the Italian-German “cosmos” of Johann Wolfgang Goethe.

The exhibition has been entitled: “The beautiful, the useful and the honest”. These three adjectives mirror the sensitivity and the values, which were formed by the “Italian experience” of Heinrich Mylius. One can observe similarities to the picture of Italy, which Goethe drew in his Italian Travel - a book, which was published exactly 200 years ago and which shaped remarkably the German perception of Italy. This picture has left its mark on the family’s history and their art’s collections, too.

The exhibition illustrates the Italian experience of the entrepreneur of Frankfurt within five sections: the first one is representing the Weimar Classicism as an important point of aesthetic reference for Heinrich Mylius. Furthermore, the exhibition centres on the crucial role of mediation and dissemination played by Mylius and his friend Gaetano Cattaneo, concerning German literature and the Italian Romanticism (Sections II, III, IV). In final section is dedicated to Mylius as a pioneer in the field of the vocational training in Italy (Section V).
